Product Highlights
  • 96-04 Butyl Flashing Tape will deform under pressure to seal laps in metal jacketing when banded in place.
  • May also be used to seal butt joints in rigid cellular glass or other foam insulations or fill voids to create water tight seal.
  • May be used to seal butyl rubber sheet to the insulation or vapor retarder surface under banding over contraction joints in cryogenic insulation applications.
  • As a butyl tape there is no required cure or dry time so joints can be closed and sealed immediately.

Limitations
  • Do not apply to damp, frosty or contaminated surfaces.
  • Confirm adhesion with intended substrates prior to application.
  • Not for structural bonding. Requires mechanical fastening or stabilized joints to prevent substrate movement.
Preparation and Application Information

Preparation

  • Apply only to clean, dry, oil-free surfaces. Surfaces must be free of frost and water. Dirt, dust and loose insulation must be removed prior to application.

Application

  • Do not overlap tape to join, always butt ends without stretching to avoid creating a high spot in the sealant.
  • For sealing metal jacketing apply the tape to the longitudinal lap and around the abutting circumferential lap. Leave the release liner in place until the jacket is ready to be installed to avoid contamination. Remove release liner on the circumferential sealant tape and place metal jacket in place making contact with the circumferential lap on the leading edge and making its way around to the open longitudinal lap. Press firmly in place making complete contact with both surfaces to the sealant. Then, lifting the lap slightly, remove the release liner from longitudinal overlap. Band jacketing in place putting pressure between laps to create the seal. All metal jacketing shall be installed to be water shedding over the sealed joints.
  • On insulation joints place sealant on the butt joint and then tightly press the adjoining insulation in place compressing sealant tape slightly to ensure a tight seal. Band or tape insulation in place under slight compression to ensure full and tight seal.

Clean Up

  • No assembly application clean up required. If disassembly is desired, the butyl glazing tape may be removed from non-aged assemblies by grasping the butyl tape and rapidly (in a snapping motion) pulling it from the substrate surface. Any residual butyl material may be removed from the hardest surfaces with a 50/50 isopropyl alcohol/water solution. Do not use solvents such as mineral spirits or paint thinners.
