- Product Highlights
- Foster 31-31, Insulfas, Coating is a light-colored, tough, washable, abrasion-resistant coating for thermal insulation on indoor applications.
- It is also used for cementing laps of canvas or glass lagging cloth.
- It provides a protective finish for insulation on air conditioning ducts and cold water piping when applied in 2 coats with 10x10 white glass cloth embedded between coats or as a lagging adhesive and finish with canvas or glass cloth reinforcement.
- When relative humidity exceeds 75% for continuous periods or where the insulated piping or equipment contains chilled water, ice water, brine or refrigerant, vapor barrier protection is required.
- The successful performance of this finish system depends upon application over adequate insulation, so that under service conditions the surface temperature exceeds the dew point temperature.
- Insulfas® Coating is compatible with expanded and extruded polystirene, polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foam, and other plastic foam insulations and can be used as a sealer coat to protect them from attack by solvents in chemical resistant finishes.

Preparation
- Do not thin.
- Apply only to clean, dry, oil-free surfaces.
- Keep container closed when not in use.
Application – lagging adhesive and coating
- Apply a tack coat at 60 – 70 sq. ft. per gal. (1.5 – 1.7 m2 /l).
- Immediately embed the selected lagging fabric into the wet coating. Smooth to avoid wrinkles and overlap seams by at least 2 inches (5 cm).
- Immediately apply a finish coat at 60 – 70 sq. ft. per gal. (1.5 – 1.7 m2 /l). The dry film thickness of this application will vary with the fabric selected.
For air conditioning ducts, increase the coverage rate to 40 – 50 sq. ft. per gal. (1.0 – 1.2 m2/l) for each coat.
Application –insulation coating with mesh reinforcement
- Apply a tack coat at 40 – 50 sq. ft. per gal. (1.0 – 1.2 m2 /l).
- Immediately embed 10x10 glass cloth or Foster Mast-A-Fab 9x8 mesh cloth into the wet coating. Smooth to avoid wrinkles and overlap seams by at least 2 inches (5 cm).
- Immediately apply a finish coat at 40 – 50 sq. ft. per gal. (1.0 – 1.2 m2 /l). The dry film thickness of this application will vary with the fabric selected.
Brush and Spray
- Use clean paint brushes (suitable for water-based paints). Apply with full brush and spread out evenly.
- Insulfas Coating may be airless spray applied.
- Average viscosity range: 70,000 – 90,000 cps.
- Corrosion resistant pumps and fittings are suggested.
At a minimum we suggest the following airless spray equipment or suitable alternative package:
- PUMP : Graco Checkmate pump, 40:1 on 100cc lower, NXT2200 motor mounted on ram plate, Graco S20C – 5 gallon cart mounted ram
- FLUID HOSE : High pressure capable of 4,000 PSI. 1⁄2” inch up to 50 feet. 3/4 inch over 50 feet. Use 8’ x 1/2” I.D. hose for coupling to the gun. A higher ratio pump set-up will allow for longer hose runs up to 150’
- GUN : Graco mastic or textured coating spray guns with Tip sizes 521 to 527 Reverse-A-Clean tips
- There are many configurations of airless spray equipment that may be used and we suggest contacting an airless spray equipment supplier to put together a complete package
- Most manufacturers of mastic spray equipment maintain nearby service facilities to aid in the selection and any technical problems that arise with their equipment.
- Electric airless spray units such as a Graco Ultramax 795 or 1095 sprayer may also be used, however, due to the body of the coating they may not be capable of completely emptying a pail while spraying.
- A minimum volume in the pail may need to be maintained.
- Cleaning Information
- Use clean, fresh water for cleaning brushes and equipment before product dries.
- Dry product may be removed with hot, soapy water or strong solvents such as chlorinated solvent (non-flammable) or mineral spirits (flammable).
